LIFEGUARD TRAINING HEADQUARTERS – Your Center for Life Guard Training

Recertification is cheaper and shorter than a first course, but only if you renew before your credential expires. Once you are outside the window, most programmes make you take the full course again, at full price. That single fact is the most useful thing on this page.

Check the date on your own card

Lifeguarding credentials commonly run two years from the date of issue, not from the date you finished the class. Professional-rescuer CPR/AED often runs on a shorter cycle, sometimes one year, which is why guards routinely find their CPR has expired while their lifeguarding is still current.

Do not rely on a reminder email. Training organizations change platforms, email addresses go stale, and the consequence lands on you in May when a facility asks for a current card.

The renewal window

Most programmes will accept a recertification candidate who holds a current credential, and many allow a short grace period after expiry. The length of that grace period varies by organization and is the thing to confirm. Outside it, you are a new candidate.

Plan to renew a month or two before expiry rather than in the final week. Recertification classes run less frequently than initial courses, and they fill up ahead of the season for exactly this reason.

What a recertification course involves

A review and a reassessment rather than a full teach. Expect:

  • The prerequisite swim test again. Same standard: the continuous swim, the tread without arms, and the timed brick retrieval. Guards who have not swum since last season regularly fail this, which is the other reason to book early.
  • A skills reassessment covering entries, approaches, active and passive rescues, extrication and spinal management.
  • CPR/AED reassessment including two-rescuer sequences and bag-valve-mask work.
  • A final scenario where you run a complete response.
  • The written exam.

The in-person time is compressed relative to an initial course, but the standard is the same. Recertification is not a formality and candidates do fail it.

What it costs

Usually somewhere between half and two thirds of the initial course price, depending on the provider and the format. Many employers pay for their own staff’s recertification, because the facility needs current credentials on file to stay compliant. Ask your employer before you pay yourself. See certification cost for the wider picture.

If your certification has already expired

  1. Check how far past expiry you are. Days or a few weeks may still fall inside a grace period.
  2. Call the training organization that issued it, not a different one. Grace periods are set per organization and are not portable.
  3. If you are outside the window, book a full course. It is frustrating but it is not a penalty: the skills genuinely degrade, and the swim test will tell you so.
  4. Get back in the pool first. Whichever route you take, the prerequisite swim test is waiting at the start of it.

Staying ready between certifications

In-service training is the mechanism the industry uses for this, commonly around four hours a month during a season, and it is usually a condition of continued employment rather than something optional. It exists because scanning discipline and rescue timing decay quickly without practice, faster than knowledge does.

If you are between jobs and want to arrive at recertification in shape, the useful things to maintain are the continuous swim, the leg-only tread and the surface dive. Those are what the test measures, and they are the first to go.

Frequently asked questions

How long is a lifeguard certification valid? Commonly two years for lifeguarding, from the date of issue. Professional-rescuer CPR is often shorter. Check your card rather than assuming.

Can I recertify with a different organization? Sometimes, and sometimes not. Organizations set their own rules about which credentials they will accept for a review course. Ask before booking.

Do I have to do the swim test again? Yes, at essentially every programme. It is the prerequisite, not part of the instruction.

Is recertification available online? The theory review may be. The water skills and the CPR assessment have to be done in person.

What if I have not guarded for three years? You will be taking the full course. That is the correct outcome rather than a bureaucratic one.
